Following a public consultation, the Trust is proposing to relocate 12 Older Adult beds from the Hartington Unit on the Chesterfield Royal Hospital site, to Walton Hospital, also in Chesterfield.
There are clinical benefits of a focused unit for older adults who have specific environmental needs and safety requirements including co-location with organic mental health services – meaning access to specialist older people clinicians focused towards that cohort of patients and a safer ward environment.
Walton Hospital is approximately three miles drive from Chesterfield Royal Hospital, so within a reasonably close proximity to the existing site. The refurbishment of the ward will be in line with national guidance and shall meet the standard of the newly build hospital.
Benefits of Walton Hospital include:
Ample on-site parking facilities which are free of charge while being accessible for both staff and patients.
A temporary small catering facility where staff can buy snacks, light meals and drinks. A purpose-built kitchen and dining room is planned for late 2022.
A wide range of outpatient specialties in clinics housed in the purpose-designed Peter McCarthy Suite, which was officially opened in 2016. This includes nine clinical outpatient consultation rooms, group therapy areas and a gym.
