The range of local support services for people with immediate mental health needs is being expanded in Derby and Derbyshire.

The expansion of mental health crisis services is part of a wider programme of partnership activity led by Joined Up Care Derbyshire which aims to improve outcomes for people with immediate mental health needs. The programme should also reduce the need for people to attend hospital Emergency Departments when another service may meet their needs better in the community.

The programme includes the following services:

Derbyshire Mind has partnered with the NHS and local community organisations to launch three new mental health community drop-in services across Derbyshire. These offer immediate out-of-hours support for those with mental health concerns or who are experiencing emotional distress.

The three drop-in centres are open on Friday and Saturday evenings and on Sunday afternoons. They are located in Buxton, Ripley and Swadlincote.

Find contact details for the three drop-in centres on our help in a crisis page. And learn more about the crisis support drop-in services on the Derbyshire Mind website.

These centres, in Derby and Chesterfield, are open every evening from 4.30pm to 12.30am and are places where people can get support when they feel overwhelmed or unable to cope.

They provide a responsive tailored support service for people over 18 in Derbyshire, who are experiencing immediate mental health needs or feel that they are experiencing a crisis. They offer a compassionate and non-judgmental space with therapeutic support around ongoing safety and wellbeing, next steps in recovery and help with building a sense of hope for the future.

The Crisis House in Derby is run by Richmond Fellowship and the Crisis House in Chesterfield is run by P3. The services are overseen by the Trust’s crisis teams and will provide 24/7 support.

NHS 111 is an important milestone towards England becoming the first country in the world to offer universal access to crisis care via a 3-digit number (NHS 111 ‘select MH option’) by April 2024.

The National Mental Health and Integrated Urgent Care (IUC) teams have been working in collaboration with health and care systems and IUC providers to support this delivery.

More information to follow on this development in the coming months.

Step Down beds are organised short-stay placements to include an agreed appropriate wrap-around programme of care by way of referral from the inpatient pathway to the step-down pathway. The step-down service provision aims to support and improve the transition from inpatient facilities into the community.

The service is open 24 hours and is based at Tapton in Chesterfield, The Ark in Derby City and Lifecome in Derby with support from the community mental health and living well teams as well as social care.
