Tissington House is the home of our older adult inpatient mental health service for southern Derbyshire. This service was previously located at Ward 1, London Road Community Hospital.
About Tissington House
Tissington House is a modern 18-bedded assessment and treatment ward for people over the age of 65 with functional mental health problems, such as depression, schizophrenia, mood disorders or anxiety. Tissington House is a mixed sex ward with gender-specific sleeping areas. All bedrooms are single rooms with en-suite facilities.
Every patient on the ward receives an holistic, person-centred assessment by a multi-disciplinary team. They also receive a weekly review by the ward's consultant at the multi-disciplinary team meeting.
All care plans are person-centred and involve the individual where possible, and all care plans are reviewed on a regular basis.
The ward team has a strong focus on recovery. Discharge planning always begins from admission and the Care Programme Approach (CPA) guidelines are followed. The ward team aims to work in partnership with statutory and voluntary agencies to achieve best practice.
Referral criteria

Adults over the age of 65 presenting with functional mental illness or others assessed as needing the service

Patients who have been seen and assessed by a doctor or community mental health team as needing to be admitted to hospital

Reasons for admission need to be predominantly mental health and it is aimed for all patients to have been screened prior to admission for common medical problems by their GP.

University Hospitals of Derby and Burton NHS Foundation Trust (UHDB) requested the use of Ward 1 on the London Road Community Hospital site on an interim basis. This was so that Ward 1 could accommodate urgently needed cancer and lymphoedema services.
The use of Ward 1 in this way formed part of UHDB’s recovery and restoration programme following the COVID-19 pandemic.
Before hosting our older adult mental health services, Tissington House was vacant. It was formerly one of two inpatient units on the Kingsway Hospital site for older people with acute dementia needs; it became vacant following a reduction in demand for specialist dementia inpatient care thanks to the introduction of community services such as the Dementia Rapid Response Teams.
Tissington House offers a calm, specialised healthcare environment for patients. By moving to the Kingsway Hospital site, the service is co-located with other inpatient mental health services including the specialist inpatient dementia unit, Cubley Court, which continues to operate on the site. There are a number of people who will have both an organic and functional mental health diagnosis. These individuals can be supported through either service, depending on the nature of each individual’s clinical needs.
